Whooh! It's been a long crazy week. Sorry for the lack of posts and comments! Catch up this weekend.
As we all know, wallpaper is back, in a big way. OK, it's been back for a few years but I take a while to catch on. And this was after we totally stripped the wallpaper from our master bath. I am now contemplating papering our foyer (after swearing on the several occasions I've removed wallpaper that I would NEVER, NEVER install wallpaper). But take one look at Thom Filicia's Designer Showhouse in House Beautiful and you might convinced as well.
Here's the background. Though our builder is known as one of the better builders in the Southeast, (OK, subdivision-type builders) we have "lines" where sheetrock pieces are joined, as well as other imperfections. Unfortunately, a satin paint I selected served to only make all imperfections more obvious. For years I've been trying to decide what to do- and think a Grass Cloth wallpaper could be the solution.
Uneven wall appearance
This is not grasscloth's first bout of popularity- which may explain my nervousness. Grasscloth was big in the 1960s and 1970s. And therein lies the worry. Will this be the avocado green appliances I am dying to get rid of in a few years? I'm hoping no- it appears the Chinese also made grasscloth- and used it as a fabric; I also read it was introduced in France in the 18th Century. So perhaps there is some longevity potential?
Phillip Jeffries seems to be the go-to source for many designers...
I adore Elizabeth Dinkel's work here:
Veranda's 2008 The Great House
Same color, same room (bedroom), very different look and feel...
Trump Towers by The Tamarind Group
You don't necessarily get the texture in this image, but I love the room!
Stately Homes by the Sea 2009, Designer Joe Lucas
The texture is a bit more obvious in Patrick Lonn Design's bathroom. Isn't it rich-looking?
Rushmore Residence
I adore pretty much everything about this room.
Long Island 2009 Designer's Showcase, by Jackie Higgins
And this one.
Hearst Designer Showcase 2008 by Charlotte Moss
Love the palm-feeling that this room invokes.
Chad Hoeft
This room has a similar feel- only more serene.

Metallic could be fun too...

I would love to DIY this and Centsational Girl is my inspiration

We have a painted grass cloth room, our "green" room. The look is slightly more vertical than horizontal. It's subtle and just great. At the time I thought it was a dumb idea but the architect and 2 designers and "trust us." By far the most interesting walls in our house.
ReplyDeleteDo it!!
You have really pulled together some fabulous rooms here. I adore that bathroom in the Rushmore Residence.
ReplyDeleteI love glasscloth wallpaper and I think it's here for the long haul. I also think it's a great solution for your walls given their "imperfections" (though depending on how uneven they actually are, you may have to even them out a bit anyway before installing the wallpaper).
ReplyDeleteEmmie -- I love the look, especially the natural color. Go for it!
ReplyDeleteI'm doing grasscloth in my "difficult den". I've had my eye on it for quite some time. I am, however, taking down all the wallpaper that is currently in my hallway, foyer, formal living and dining rooms. After 10 years, you just need to update. However, grasscloth is really timeless and I agree, here for the long haul.
ReplyDeleteThen again, it's just wallpaper. In ten years you can take it down.
It's funny, I grew up with wallpaper and now my mom is 100% paint. But I like the idea of the texture and pattern, it's the commitment I'd have a problem with. This brings back memories of the yellow/orange/green flower wallpaper pattern from my childhood. Your choices are so much nicer, haha.
ReplyDeleteI answered your question on my blog, but then I realized you're local, so I could've given you the contact info. www.atlantaconcreteengraving.com. He is really nice, I left an email on the website and he called me that night, came for an estimate the next day and had an opening because a scheduled job wasn't ready for him, so we jumped on it. Less than a week from first contact to finished product.
ReplyDeleteGrasscloth is definitely a classic and I don't think you can go wrong with it. And I think it is the perfect solution for your walls. This is an amazing roundup of examples. Keep us posted!
ReplyDeleteI think it creates a gorgeous texture. I was thinking about putting it in my guest bathroom!
ReplyDeleteGreat post!!! I love grasscloth. I've been wanting to use some like that champagne metallic backed type that Candice Olson uses all the time. Thanks for stopping by my blog, I hope you'll come back...I'm so glad I've discovered yours!
ReplyDeleteI am going to paper my bedroom and I seriously considering a grasscloth...It is kind of timeless! Even though we don't think so!! I love it!!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, what fantastic pictures. My absolute favorite is #3 followed by the last one. Wow!
