Bark the Herald!

I was preparing to do a post on my Christmas wish list, when I read Maison Luxe's recent post and it stopped me in my tracks. I have been so excited for all the gifts I'm finding for my friends and family... and admittedly in the gifts I've been finding for myself. I'd forgotten- for the short-term- about all the charities in need. There are MANY great causes out there that now have one great thing in common- the economy has hurt them far more than it has hurt many of us.

So, with that and the spirit of giving in mind, here's a round-up of my favorite ways to help.

First, the Furrytale Farm, which I discovered on Maison Luxe. I cannot tell you how moved I was when I went to their website. God Bless these people. In their own words, . . .a place where old and unwanted animals can come and live out their days in peace and comfort. . .a place where abused and abandoned animals can learn to trust again and have a second chance at happily ever after. . .a place where neighs mingle with brays, where oinks are truly squeals of delight, and where woofs are welcoming. . .a place where kids learn to respect and value animals and learn in turn to respect and value themselves.

Furrytale Farm has lost their Farm. They are raising funds to get buy a new piece of property so that they can continue saving animals. Donate NOW and (with a copy of donation) Maison Luxe will reduce the amount of your next purchase by your donation or match your donation.

Best Friends Animal Society runs the largest animal shelter (you may recall that they are rehabilitating many of the pitties rescued from jackass Michael Vick. Sorry, it just comes out of my mouth that way). Donate NOW and your gift will be matched dollar for dollar up to $1 million. And (or) head to your nearest mall for St. Nick's Pet Pics at malls owned by General Growth Properties. Photo ops run every Monday through December from 5-9PM. Click here to find a mall near you.

The Humane Society of the United States

The Humane Society is the largest animal organization in the US- with a mission Celebrating Animals, Confronting Cruelty. In addition to a donation to the HSUS (HERE!), you can shop with companies that will donate to the HSUS with each purchase. Click here!

If you're in Atlanta, visit the Shoppe of Vinings next Wednesday December 9 from 4-8PM. 20% of each purchase will be donated to Adopt a Golden Atlanta. I'm hoping to have kicked my second winter cold in time to be out and about!

Oh- and this does NOT mean I am "above" posting a Christmas wish list or gift ideas. But that will come later! ;-)

Take care,

Emmie

  7. Emmie -- thank you so much for the list. I have been thinking about this lately...after attending church on Sunday, we all went to Starbucks as we usually do, and my Mom ordered a hot chocolate and sandwich for a homeless man, who was chilled, sitting on the street corner. He was so happy to receive something warm and delicious on such a cold day -- his response to her gesture brought tears to my eyes.

It is so easy to forget to be thoughtful this time of year, and to give whenever possible, from the heart. We can get so caught up in the things that we pressure ourselves to do, that we can forget to think simply -- about those with basic needs. You have me thinking of all kinds of ways that I can help others -- thank you for that! :)

I hope you have a rewarding and lovely week.
