Candler Park Fall Fest- a look at an Atlanta In-Town Neighborhood

Mr. Southern and I attended the Candler Park Fall Fest this weekend to show Kaylee at Rescue Me's tent. I thought I'd share a little of Candler Park with you today! The area was founded as Edgewood in 1890, but residents petitioned it be part of Atlanta in the early 1900s. The area got its name after Asa Candler (of Coca-Cola fame) donated land in 1992. Candler Park is notably just east of the arts area known as Little Five Points and near Emory University. 1920s Craftsman-style homes dominate the landscape and the neighborhood is listed on the National Register of Historic places. While the median home price is around $450k, there are quite a few different offerings.

I have totally fallen in love with this property- a bank-owned collection of condos around $100k.

Look at the light!

This one is a bit more representative of the Craftsman style, listed for $557k. Also features a separate 1br, 1ba apartment.

Similar, but a bit smaller with I think just 3 bedrooms for $325. I love the covered side porch.

A 4 bedroom, 3 1/2 bath Craftsman for $550k. It still is a bit cozy-feeling inside.

Another 4 bedroom, this one is one of my favorites. Look at the upstairs porch! For $689k, presumably for upgrades like the kitchen.

Something a little different-- a Victorian, built in 1915. Listed for $378. The interior has some interesting features...

This guy is the priciest option, but has 5 beds, 5 baths, and a 2 car garage (not a guarantee here). $925k.

I love the windows here...

Another upstairs porch!

And while this one is not on the market, I had to share. Appears there was another house in its place at one point. The owners, with architect Jonathan Elmer, are creating an energy efficient modern home. Thoughts?

Candler Park also hosted a home tour Sunday, but unfortunately we missed it.

Hope y'all had a great weekend!

  5. Glad you enjoyed the festival. In the fall even the festivals have festivals. There is something eye-worthy on every street in Candler Park and quite a few hidden clusters of cool places: Josephene and Elmira, Indiana, Terrace. I don't know what to make of the moderns: you can do good or bad in any style. "Beautiful" never comes to mind as my first impression for most them.

  6. Its funny I run around this area and have wanted to see the interior of many of the homes you listed here forever-so thank you! Being that this is my home base, I also made the tour. So many fabulous places, just lovely-http://highglossblue.blogspot.com/2009/10/pink-mums-purple-house.html

I will politely remind Prissy Southern Prep that it does take all kinds. We cherish our in-town neighborhoods for the variety that they boast.
Architects exercising their trade with earth friendly innovation in the creation of a home that I imagine will have a beautiful, light filled interior to go with its minimalist exterior-is fine by me!

Hope you enjoyed our hood, come back next weekend for the Halloween parade if you can-its better than Christmas ;-)

  9. OMG, what fabulous eye candy. You just don't get historic dwellings that aren't over a mil or in a really bad area in Tampa. So sad.

  10. I love an old craftsman style home. My old neighborhood in Houston had them aplenty and it creates such a pictureseque street...but then quite a few very modern townhomes started to replace some of the older, more rundown craftsmen and it just really look away from the whole look of the neighborhood.

  11. I love the craftsman, it reminds me of my 2 months in Virginia Highlands in my rental craftsman!

  12. Thanks for all the happy comments!

There are some steals in this market= an one on Iverson Street that somehow didn't make it in this post. (???)

I must admit, I'm not wild about this modern home... but couldn't really decide how I felt about whether it "belonged" or not. Now, if I absolutely adored the house that was there before, that might be a different story. I was, however, very interested to hear what others think about "fitting" a modern house in.

  14. Beautiful buildings. I like the modern example too, although it's so difficult to tell how building like that will age - they can become real eyesores with weather exposure.

  20. Oh my. For a minute I was lost in that building of condos. In my mind, I had moved in and had the other space/s rented out already with a community garden in the backyard. Great light! Great colors! Maybe I should paint...
